Mary Wagner, PharmD
Associate Professor, Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy
Dr. Mary Wagner is a clinical pharmacist and Associate Professor at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy (EMSOP) involved in teaching, service, and scholarship. As faculty and a clinical pharmacist, she and her students see patients with providers in interprofessional ambulatory care clinics. After 20 years in an academic neurology clinic, Dr. Wagner joined a nurse managed clinic, now known as the Rutgers Community Health Clinic (RCHC), as part of an Interprofessional collaborative practice model in an urban setting. As a clinical pharmacist, Dr. Wagner evaluates patient medication and medical history, provides medication therapy management, and performs limited physical exams.
Dr. Wagner’s scholarship has involved IPE, policy change related to how best to utilize pharmacists as part of an interprofessional team, and how best to utilize medications in patients with neurologic conditions. She has been the EMSOP representative in 5 different IPE training grants with the School of Nursing, School of Dental Medicine, and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Wagner’s involvement in the HRSA-funded grant Special Populations Interprofessional Care Experiences (SPICE) supports improving access to and quality of oral health care for vulnerable and underserved communities within the city of Newark, NJ and surrounding areas by providing enhanced training of diverse health professions students. The Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program grant included social work, nursing, rehabilitative medicine, and pharmacy students who were integrated into various clinics including the RCHC. Dr. Wagner has also worked with Robert Wood Johnson Medical School on an AMA funded IPE project that sent pharmacy, medical, and social work students to patient homes to perform evaluations aimed at improving chronic disease.
Dr. Wagner serves as a member of the Rutgers Interprofessional Education Faculty Advisory Council and is Co-director of the EMSOP honors research program where she oversees student research. Dr. Wagner is a member of the interagency Council of Osteoporosis for the New Jersey Department of Human Services. She also serves as a steering committee member for the grant funded Integrative Care Project which aims to enable Rutgers University to create a new training paradigm for students in the health professions that focuses on the integration of behavioral health into primary care.
