SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Diversifying Interprofessionalism: Who’s Missing from the Table? (April 24\, 2024 12pm-1pm EST)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Nexus Summit 2023 Seminar Showcase series. \nYou may register for this and the other webinars in the Series here. \n \nSeries Description: \nThe Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase is a free webinar series from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. The seminar showcase features the highest rated peer-reviewed seminars offered during last year’s annual conference\, the Nexus Summit 2023\, and covers topics ranging from artificial intelligence (AI)\, longitudinal assessment strategies\, team well-being\, health equity\, multi-institutional models\, and interprofessional advocacy\, among others.  Offered between March – July 2024\, the Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase will provide an opportunity to learn from\, with\, and about the work being done to improve practice\, education and health for those we serve. \n  \nAbstract: \nProponents of interprofessional education and practice have great opportunity to think beyond the traditional health care team by considering the wide variety of health and social care professionals who serve our communities in their unique and distinct ways. For example\, graduates of health-related programs from community colleges provide many of these essential services; yet\, they are frequently missing from interprofessional discussions. \nWhen these professions are not included in important conversations about health and social care services\, then how inclusive is interprofessionalism? When these professions are absent\, diversity of thought is also absent. When diversity of thought is absent\, then diversity of persons on our interprofessional teams is absent. If diversity of persons\, thoughts\, and professions are absent\, then we must ask ourselves “how just\, equitable\, and inclusive are our interprofessional efforts\, really?” \nThis workshop will encourage participant and/or institutional self-assessment\, reflection\, and action planning about diversity of professions within their institutions\, IPE programming\, and leadership. These professions may be graduates or students of community colleges and universities and may include clinical\, nonclinical\, technical\, and support personnel. By including these professionals\, diversity of thought\, persons\, and identities grows. By promoting inclusion of diverse\, high impact\, contributing professionals to patient/client care teams\, seats at our interprofessional tables will be filled by the right players at the right time for delivering the highest quality and safest care to consumers of our services. \nThe Summit’s theme “Interprofessional Collaboration to Address Health Equity\, Racism and Bias in Interprofessional Practice” will be addressed by highlighting incomplete diversity of professions and personal identities\, which\, consequently\, contributes to perpetuation of implicit biases\, institutional barriers\, structural racism\, and inequity of not only members of the interprofessional team\, but also of consumers of care. Patient/client care is enhanced by a diverse workforce\, and analyzing professional diversity of interprofessional teams will contribute toward societal justice\, equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and belonging (JEDI+B). \nAfter attending this session\, learners will be able to:\n-Engage in critical self and organizational assessment of interprofessional inclusion for determining which professions are missing from their “interprofessional tables”\n-Identify the critical insights that members of these missing professions might contribute to the interprofessional dialogue for enhancing patient/client outcomes\n-Identify and share at least one action item to increase diversity of professions on their interprofessional team(s) \nKnowledge gained from this workshop may be immediately actionable by the creation of a tangible plan for diversifying professions on their interprofessional teams through the lens of JEDI+B (justice\, equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and belonging) \nLearning objectives will be achieved by including interactive discussions through chat contributions\, word clouds\, small group discussion\, and building a collective Google Doc that captures group-based action items and then shared with all participants. Lastly\, the next scheduled AIHC Social Hour will be the follow-up portion to this workshop for a check-in on progress on action items and plans. This topic will be easily generalizable to Social Hour guests who did not engage in the Summit workshop through encouragement to offer in-the-moment contributions to topic. \n  \nPresenters: \nErin Breitenbach\, PhD\, MEd\, A T Still University \nGina Baugh\, PharmD\, West Virginia University \nDan Ferguson\, MS\, Yakima Valley College \nKelly Karpa\, PhD\, FAPE\, NAP\, East Tennessee State University \nAmber King\, PharmD\, BCPS\, FNAP\, Thomas Jefferson University \nAngela Cecil\, PhD\, MBA\, OTR\, Texas Woman’s University

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Exploring the Future of AI Within Health Professions Education (April 3\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nAt a recent workshop run by the National Academies’ Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education (HPE)\, educators and practitioners with varying levels of understanding of artificial intelligence (AI)\, gathered to listen to and learn from those with experience in applying AI in HPE. Discussions were based on a framework proposed by Lomis et al. (2021) that emphasized collective action of educators across professions to implement and optimize the use of AI while mitigating unintended consequences. This discussion\, and the wisdom drawn from the audience’s questions and comments\, laid a foundation for next steps in following a roadmap for leveraging AI in classrooms and clinics. A proposed 60-minute skill-building seminar would introduce knowledge and skills that are immediately actionable for educating health professionals and their learners on critical issues to consider in relation to AI. \nTopics to be explored in this seminar would include: \n\nAI involvement and transparency in diagnosis and treatment planning\nAddressing public mistrust of AI through community education\nIntegration of AI into healthcare education and competencies\nEnsuring global participation and equity in AI integration\nAI applications in clinical education\, mental health\, and disaster response and potential disruptions to medical specialties\n\n  \nPresenters: \nKimberly Lomis\, MD\, American Medical Association \nPamela Jeffries\, PhD\, RN\, FAAN\, ANEF\, FSSH\, Vanderbilt University \nCornelius James\, MD\, University of Michigan \nCarole Tucker\, PhD\, PT\, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston \nCarl Sheperis\, PhD\, NCC\, CCMHC\, MAC\, ACS\, Kutztown University

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Interprofessional Practice and Education Through a One Health Lens (March 19\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nInterprofessional Education (IPE) has become a key focus in the curricula of health professions\, including veterinary medicine. The broad purpose of IPE is to provide educational opportunities between two or more professions that lead to current and future collaboration to improve patient and client care and health outcomes. One of the challenges of implementing IPE programs that include veterinary medicine is understanding the role of the veterinarian in the health team. The One Health initiative\, with its focus on interprofessional collaboration\, shares many similar themes with IPE and is widely utilized in veterinary medical education. This seminar will focus on how IPE can leverage One Health concepts and improve inclusion of veterinary medicine and other non-traditional professions such as environmental science and ecosystem health. \nOne Health is an approach that recognizes that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. As populations grow and expand into new geographic areas\, close contact with animals and their environments provides more opportunities for diseases to pass between animals and people. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is an example of a disease with transmission factors in humans\, animals\, and the environment. Organizations that focus on One Health competencies\, often adopt the same competency frameworks used in interprofessional work because the core concepts involve bringing multiple professions together\, fostering effective collaboration and team work\, to improve health outcomes. Focusing One Health and IPE on issues surrounding zoonotic diseases\, water and food security\, antimicrobial resistance\, and the impact of societal\, environmental\, and climatic factors are in alignment with the expressed goals of improving care and health outcomes. \nAddressing the theme of Building the IPE Case Through Information\, Evidence and Outcomes\, inclusion of One Health concepts and practitioners\, especially those connected to veterinary medicine and environmental science\, will expand the reach of IPE work. This session intends to leverage the relationship in advancing IPE through One Health in curricula across the nation\, especially including programs of veterinary medicine. Panelists from multiple institutions will share experiences and best-practices for incorporating topics related to human\, animal\, and environmental health into IPE curricula. Active learning will be encouraged through the use of short polls spliced between speakers and an interactive virtual whiteboard that tracks visually the links between IPE and One Health. Participants will be invited to share and reflect on their experience with One Health and veterinary medicine and methods they can utilize to incorporate One Health topics into existing IPE programs. \nLearning objectives and actionable skills: \n\nDefine One Health and interpret how One Health and IPE are similar.\nAnalyze how One Health concepts can be incorporated into interprofessional curricula.\nEnvision an action plan for the development/integration of One Health-focused IPE at participant’s university or organization\n\nThis seminar is submitted on behalf of the Clinical and Translational Science Award One Health Alliance (COHA)\, a consortium of veterinary schools that facilitates implementation of IPE. The collective expertise allows successful interprofessional interactions in a One Health context. \n  \nPresenters: \nClaire Tucker\, DVM\, MPH\, MS\, Post-Doctoral Fellow\, Colorado State University \nHossein Khalili\, BScN\, MScN\, PhD\, FNAP\, Winston-Salem State University \nAmy Blue\, PhD\, University of Florida \nJohn Tegzes\, VMD\, Western University of Health Sciences
