SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2024 Seminar Showcase: Navigating Complexities of Large-Scale Multi-Institutional IPE/CP Research: Quantitative Assessment of IPEC Competencies Across Diverse Groups and Contexts
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Nexus Summit 2024 Seminar Showcase series. \nYou may register for this and the other webinars in the Series here. \nSeries Description: \nThe Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase is a free webinar series from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. The Seminar Showcase features the highest-rated peer-reviewed seminars offered during last year’s annual conference\, the Nexus Summit 2024\, and covers topics drawn from the Nexus Summit 2024 themes\, presenting this excellent content to our entire audience for the first time. Offered between February – June 2025\, the Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase will provide an opportunity to learn from\, with\, and about the work being done to improve practice\, education and health for those we serve. \n  \n\n\n\nAbstract: \n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do we know IPE interventions are effective and participants are gaining proficiency in IPEC Competencies? Multi-institutional studies are necessary to build the evidence base for interprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPE/CP). They enable the practice community to understand the impact of IPE/CP on Quadruple Aim outcomes and study the efficacy of interventions across diverse clinical\, educational\, and geographical settings\, and cultural groups. \nAlthough the necessity for using common validated measures of interprofessional collaboration in multi-institutional research is widely acknowledged in IPE/CP literature\, one aspect of validity that is often overlooked is “measurement equivalence.” An assessment has measurement equivalence if its subscales and interpretation of questions are consistent across groups. Understanding if our assessments demonstrate measurement equivalence across diverse interprofessional teams\, patients\, and caregivers in a variety of settings is crucial for valid cross-group comparisons\, to minimize bias in research findings\, and advance IPE/CP measurement. \nAligned with the summit theme “Navigating Complexity to Advance Outcomes\,” this seminar will empower learners to navigate complexity of quantitative assessment in large-scale multi-institutional IPE/CP research. The seminar will begin with a non-technical description of measurement equivalence and its role in reducing bias in IPE/CP research. The process for interprofessional multi-institutional collaborations that test for measurement equivalence will be outlined\, with step-by-step examples from the presenters’ own interprofessional multi-institutional collaboration of the cross-institutional measurement equivalence of the Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide®\, a 360-degree assessment linked to the IPEC competencies for measuring interprofessional collaboration in educational and clinical settings. The collaboration used data from 5\,130 pre-licensure students from 17 professions who participated in IPE from 2021-2023 at two academic health centers. \nThe steps of this process include: \nStep 1: Networking and Exploring \n\nBuilding an interprofessional multi-institutional team\, including someone with measurement science expertise.\nReflecting on cross-institutional similarity and diversity\n\nStep 2: Building the Research Foundation \n\nAligning assessment tools and strategies\nConsidering key questions for interprofessional multi-institutional research collaborations\n\nStep 3: Data Analysis (High-Level Overview) \n\nPreparing interprofessional multi-institutional data for analysis\nChecking statistical assumptions for measurement equivalence\nTesting for measurement equivalence across groups informed by prior theory or research.\n\nStep 4: Evaluation and Next Steps \n\nMoving forward if measurement equivalence is not achieved.\nSetting benchmarks to determine successful collaboration and/or effective IPE interventions or competency proficiency\n\nLearning Objectives:\nAfter attending this session\, learners will be able to: \n\nDescribe what it means for an assessment to demonstrate “measurement equivalence” across diverse groups or settings.\nExplain the importance of measurement equivalence for reducing bias in large-scale\, multi-institutional IPE/CP research with diverse groups.\nDescribe strategies for building a multi-institutional research collaboration\, including ways to involve team members with complimentary expertise like measurement scientists.\nDevelop a plan to initiate or expand multi-institutional partnerships to test measurement equivalence of one’s own assessments.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nPresenters: \nMaria Brucato\, PhD\, Thomas Jefferson University \nMargaret Robinson\, M.Ed\, University of Oklahoma \nJulie Liskov\, BA\, Thomas Jefferson University \nKathleen Tabak\, BA\, MLIS\, University of Oklahoma \nShoshana Sicks\, EdD\, Thomas Jefferson University

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: What’s Your Pitch? Adopting a Business Approach to Advocate for IPE Resources (July 10\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is part of the Nexus Summit 2023 Seminar Showcase series. \nYou may register for this and the other webinars in the Series here. \n \nSeries Description: \nThe Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase is a free webinar series from the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. The seminar showcase features the highest rated peer-reviewed seminars offered during last year’s annual conference\, the Nexus Summit 2023\, and covers topics ranging from artificial intelligence (AI)\, longitudinal assessment strategies\, team well-being\, health equity\, multi-institutional models\, and interprofessional advocacy\, among others.  Offered between March – July 2024\, the Nexus Summit Seminar Showcase will provide an opportunity to learn from\, with\, and about the work being done to improve practice\, education and health for those we serve. \n  \nAbstract: \nMost healthcare education program accreditors in the US require that learners receive training and experience that will enable them to collaborate effectively on interprofessional teams when they graduate (HPAC\, 2019). However\, a recent study of the organizational structure of IPE programs in the U.S. found that dedicated resources for IPE tend to be associated with centralized infrastructure at institutions with an academic health center (Shrader et al\, 2022). Institutions without such resources may struggle to develop and sustain IPE programs due to a variety of barriers at the individual\, institutional\, and governmental/policy levels (Lawlis et al.\, 2014). Program leaders need tools and strategies that can help them find their own IPE niche and advocate for resources to support their efforts. The IPEC Institutional Assessment Instrument (Zorek et al.\, 2022) provides a framework that IPE leaders can use to identify the opportunities and gaps in their institution’s approach to IPE. \nThe purpose of this seminar is to provide IPE leaders with tools to evaluate their current assets\, leverage their institution’s strengths to create meaningful IPE for their setting\, and develop a business case that provides a compelling argument for support. \nIn addition to the IPEC institutional assessment\, we will introduce two additional tools\, First\, we will use Liberating Structures\, a set of interactive methods for effectively harnessing creative ideas from stakeholders (Lipmanowicz & McCandless\, 2013). Second\, we will also introduce participants to the pitch deck\, a popular business technique that can be adapted to help academics tell more compelling stories (Toor\, 2022). We will address two of the conference themes. We will help participants begin to build their own IPE case using information and evidence that can inform outcomes. These tools and resources will help to develop IPE leaders that can create and sustain effective programs. \nAs a result of this seminar\, participants will be able to: \n\nEvaluate the current state of IPE at their own institution\nDiscuss methods for gathering information and evidence to build their IPE case\nDevelop a pitch for a sustainable IPE program\n\n  \nPresenters: \nKelly Lockeman\, PhD\, Virginia Commonwealth University \nJoseph Zorek\, PharmD\, BCGP\, FNAP\, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Models in Action: Multi-institutional Approaches to Developing Comprehensive IPE Curricula (June 27\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nThe need for intentionally structured IPE experiences with clear goals and metrics across the learning continuum has been nationally and repeatedly endorsed. The 2019 Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative (HPAC) report stresses the importance of developing and organizing quality IPE programs\, including systematic institutional IPE approaches\, collaboration across academic programs to scaffold learning experiences appropriate to learners’ levels\, and longitudinal integration into existing professional curricula. However\, challenges in designing systematic IPE curricula across health professions have highlighted the need for best practice IPE experience criteria\, an inventory of opportunities\, and a process to categorize and organize interprofessional learning experiences. \nTo address these needs\, three universities in the United States first independently developed innovative models within their institution’s IPE curriculum structure to 1) establish criteria for defining IPE experiences; 2) inventory existing non-centralized IPE opportunities across academic programs and clinical settings; 3) formally evaluate inventoried experiences using the criteria; and 4) provide a framework to identify\, compare\, and stratify IPE experiences satisfying the criteria. The models were designed to allow the interprofessional leaders at each institution to describe a “vision\, framework\, and justification” for their IPE curricular offerings\, as HPAC suggests. \nThis seminar will guide participants through the process of generating an approach to establishing and organizing quality IPE at their own institutions. The authors will present findings from a cross-institutional analysis of the models described above; share lessons learned; and work with participants to develop concrete next steps toward continued pursuit of best practices to promote high-quality IPE. Interactive strategies will include polls to gauge current statuses of the IPE models at participants’ home institutions and a worksheet to outline next steps toward creating systematic IPE plans locally. Attendees will leave with knowledge of best practices for creating their own “vision\, framework\, and justification” for their institution’s IPE curriculum\, as well as strategies for how to do so. \nThe seminar will address the theme of “The Classroom and Beyond: Preparing Students for Collaborative Practice” by describing and facilitating implementation of IPE models employing systematic approaches to defining and organizing IPE across the continuum of learners. Aligned with the HPAC guidance for creating quality IPE\, interprofessional programming that is intentionally structured and categorized using such models will allow for higher quality interprofessional experiences\, better preparing students to practice collaboratively. The seminar will describe macro-level approaches for enhancing IPE locally to affect better teamwork in practice. \n  \nPresenters: \nShoshana Sicks\, EdD\, Thomas Jefferson University \nBrooke Salzman\, MD\, FNAP\, Thomas Jefferson University \nSara North\, PT\, DPT\, PhD\, MEd.\, PNAP\, University of Minnesota \nJennifer Jessen\, EdD\, RN\, CNOR\, FNAP\, Creighton University \nCheri Friedrich\, DNP\, APRN\, IBCLC\, CPNP-PC\, FNAP\, FAAN\, University of Minnesota \nKimberly Beran-Sheplar\, PT\, DPT\, Creighton University \nAmber King\, PharmD\, BCPS\, FNAP\, Thomas Jefferson University \nBrian Sick\, MD\, FACP\, FNAP\, University of Minnesota

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: It’s Our Job: Modeling Team Well-being as Leaders in Interprofessional Education and Practice (June 17\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nThe seminar will provide a platform to share how interprofessional leaders are supporting some of the priority areas of the National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being. The National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being (National Academy of Medicine\, 2022) describes “changes needed across the health system and at the organizational level to improve the well-being of the health workforce.” The National Plan includes seven priority areas and advocates that health worker well-being requires support from multiple units\, including academic institutions or training programs. There is evidence that a positive outcome of interprofessional collaborative practice is improved employee satisfaction and decreased burnout (Martinussen et al.\, 2012; Al Sabei et al.\, 2022). The National Plan affirms this research by advocating this as part of the rationale for health workers to operate in teams. To support this work\, it is important that interprofessional spaces and leaders model interprofessional teamwork to promote a positive\, safe\, and inclusive work environment. \nThe panel will dive into specific priority areas for implementation. For example\, one of the priority areas is to “Create and sustain positive work and learning environments and culture.” Our speakers will share how they are addressing respective action statements such as “setting reasonable productivity expectations and providing adequate resources to support expectations” or “creating and implementing processes for meaningful recognition” for faculty and staff. Supporting faculty and staff well-being is a shared responsibility. It is important for IPE offices and committees to acknowledge and share within their own institutions how they are contributing to the national well-being movement. \nThe Summit theme of sustaining IPE and its leadership will be addressed by providing IPE leaders with resources\, such as the National Plan for Health Workforce Well-Being\, as well as discussing opportunities to support faculty and staff well-being at their own institution. Seminar participants will learn about the National Plan and its priorities and will be given examples of how current IPE offices and committees are currently supporting well-being. Additionally\, we will collectively brainstorm other opportunities to prevent burnout and stress through creating positive and safe work and learning environments\, and supporting professional well-being and psychological safety. We will enhance learning through small group discussion\, sharing ideas through an online whiteboard\, and reflecting on next steps to take action within our own workplaces. \nThe seminar will focus on two of the priority criteria: 1) a call to action and 2) design to impact Quintuple Aim outcomes. The seminar will advocate for interprofessional leaders to recognize their role in the health team\, amplify their efforts to support faculty and staff well-being\, and consider opportunities to do so at their institution or program. The Quintuple Aim includes improving the wellness of the health team. \nLearning objectives:\nAfter attending this session\, the learner will be able to: \n\nDescribe how the National Plan for Well-Being can be a supportive framework for well-being in IPE spaces.\nIdentify current and new opportunities to support faculty and staff well-being.\nDevelop a plan on next steps to support well-being within respective workplaces.\n\n  \nPresenters: \nTina Gunaldo\, PhD\, DPT\, MHS\, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans \nDusti Annan\, EdD\, Medical University of South Carolina \nAmy Blue\, PhD\, University of Florida \nHeather Hageman\, MBA\, Washington University Medical Center \nVictoria Hornyak\, PT\, DPT\, University of Pittsburgh \nVani Patterson\, MPH\, University of Michigan \nAndrea Pfeifle\, PT\, EdD\, FNAP\, The Ohio State University \nJasmine Wong\, OD\, FAAO\, DAAO (OE)\, FNAP\, Western University of Health Sciences

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: We Are Better Together: Incorporating Health Equity Education Throughout Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (May 15\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nInterprofessional education and collaborative practice (IPECP) can play an important role in creating a robust environment for appreciating health equity (HE)\, recognizing social determinants of health (SDOH)\, and teaching health- and social-care learners how to support these considerations for their patients/clients. It’s crucial to create learning opportunities to share the different perspectives each profession brings to the table. \nParticipants will learn how to incorporate aspects of HE and/or SDOH into IPECP training and at the end of this session will be able to: \n\nDescribe a structure and strategies for incorporating concepts related to health equity\, inclusion\, conflict resolution\, and SDOH across an IPE curriculum\nDescribe an experiential education model that purposefully engages students from different professions to share their perspectives on patients’ unique needs and influences on their care planning\nApply concepts for the successful inclusion of health equity-related IPECP content to their own IPE curricula/experiences\n\nThis session will explore strategies that programs can use to incorporate HE and SDOH concepts throughout IPECP\, with polling software and Jamboards used to engage participants. Presenters will highlight the importance of this topic in current healthcare\, including a consideration of the quintuple healthcare aim that emphasizes considering HE and SDOH in the care of patients/clients. Contemporary IPECP is well-positioned to support this aim through the required inclusion of HE topics and IPE as part of health- and social-care education. It is also critical for learners from all professions to appreciate SDOH\, while understanding how collaboration with other professions can help overcome limitations they may have in their own resources. Interprofessional education is an ideal model for teaching students about HE and SDOH\, and audience members from programs that have incorporated this content will have the chance to share strategies that allowed them to be successful in this space. Participants that are interested in including this content will be asked to identify barriers that might hinder\, or have hindered\, its inclusion in their curricula. Presenters will provide examples from two universities who have successfully incorporated interprofessional training opportunities related to HE and SDOH into both didactic and experiential education that directly aligns with the conference theme of Interprofessional Collaboration to Address Health Equity\, Racism and Bias in Interprofessional Practice. The combined approach of expertise from audience participants and presenters will be used to support a worksheet that each attendee will complete to outline actionable next steps for progressing IPE-related SDOH or HE content at their institution. These steps could include\, but are not limited to\, evaluating how this content might be included (if it’s not already)\, how to expand the inclusion of these topics within existing IPE curricula\, strategies for incorporating new partners into existing HE/SDOH IPE opportunities\, and/or plans for sustaining successful initiatives already in place. Regardless of where a program is at in this process\, presenters will provide information and lead a discussion that will allow each attendee to leave with an action plan of next steps specific to their program. \n  \nPresenters: \nZachary Weber\, PharmD\, BCPS\, BCACP\, CDCES\, CHC\, FASHP\, FNAP\, Indiana University \nPhil Rodgers\, PharmD\, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill \nKimberly Sanders\, PharmD\, BCPS\, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Putting the Health Back in Health Care Professional Students: An Asynchronous Interprofessional Health Promotion Course (May 8\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nPriority Category/Summit theme: This seminar presents a method for addressing one proposed Quadruple Aim strategy\, improving the clinician experience. Our focus considers health professions students and how to use the virtual classroom to enhance their future experience as practitioners. While not a typical consideration for the focus of interprofessional education\, the increasingly alarming rates of anxiety\, depression\, burnout and other maladaptive responses to stress among health care professionals has resulted in educators seeking ways to prepare students for the healthcare workplace and to increase the longevity of their careers. This session provides an example of how interdisciplinary faculty addressed the need for interprofessional education in their respective training programs\, as well as the need to address these potential concerns with their students. By explicitly including this course in health profession student training\, we hope to normalize these experiences and provide learners with access to interventions that have moderate to robust evidence for increasing vitality and engagement and/or preventing or managing anxiety\, depression and burnout. The course featured here is part of a larger resiliency training program for health professionals. The asynchronous course featured in this session is a four week course which presenters piloted with interprofessional health professions students (medicine\, nursing\, PT\, social work\, counseling). The course presents ten evidence-based interventions that serve as protective features and/or strategies for managing anxiety\, depression and burnout and is designed so learners consider their use\, not only for improved personal well-being\, but also how they can be used to manage stress on a team. Students were assigned to interprofessional teams and discussed\, among their team\, the various interventions they selected to explore. In week 3\, participants view a video of a team member who is having a terrible\, horrible\, very bad day that starts with a flat tire\, which makes her late to her shift\, which influences the other team members. The video takes her through the day and the stressors she deals with. Participants are asked to submit to their group the interventions that could be recommended for this team member. \nDescription: The seminar highlights the free\, asynchronous interprofessional course that was piloted with over 600 interprofessional students in Winter 2023. Seminar attendees will be able to tour the course ‘as students’\, see how the course integrates considerations of stress within members of a team\, and learn how the course can be used in their local setting. \nObjectives: \n\nDiscuss the free course and the Evidence-Based Interventions featured in the course.\nUnderstand how the course was designed to provide opportunities for students to practice at least one evidence-based intervention they were curious about and one they were skeptical about.\nConsider how the course was designed to provide tools to address stress for a team member.\nKnow how to access the course for use in local settings.\n\nActive learning: The session design is ‘participant as health profession student’. Proposed agenda: \n\nWelcome and introduction to the course (15 minutes)\nIndividual activity (15 minutes): Participants tour the course\, view student assignments and view at least one evidence-based intervention module\nLarge group debrief (5 minutes): Opportunity to discuss their experience and/or ask questions about the course.\nLarge group activity (15 minutes): View video designed to provide a realistic example of a team member under stress and an opportunity for students to consider which interventions would be useful for that team member.\nLarge Group discussion and questions (10 minutes): Discuss the video and its applications. Address questions about the course and how to access it.\n\nKnowledge/Actionable skills: The seminar provides an example of a virtual\, asynchronous\, interactive interprofessional learning experience that focuses on mitigating the physical\, affective\, and emotional impacts of stress. It provides access to knowledge and experiences that can have immediate personal impact and application for attendees\, and offers a free resource that can be utilized in local settings. \n  \nPresenters: \nDenise Kay\, PhD\, University of Central Florida \nKatherine Daly\, PhD\, MA\, University of Central Florida \nLaurie Neely\, PT\, DPT\, University of Central Florida \nAsli Yalim\, MSW\, PhD\, University of Central Florida \nDesiree Diaz\, PhD\, FNP-BC\, CNE\, CHSE-A\, ANEF\, FSSH\, FAAN\, University of Central Florida \nDenyi Canario Asencio\, RYT 200\, University of Central Florida \nMelissa Cowan\, MA\, University of Central Florida \nMagdalena Pasarica\, MD\, PhD\, University of Central Florida \nMonica Bailey\, MA\, University of Central Florida \n

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Diversifying Interprofessionalism: Who’s Missing from the Table? (April 24\, 2024 12pm-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nProponents of interprofessional education and practice have great opportunity to think beyond the traditional health care team by considering the wide variety of health and social care professionals who serve our communities in their unique and distinct ways. For example\, graduates of health-related programs from community colleges provide many of these essential services; yet\, they are frequently missing from interprofessional discussions. \nWhen these professions are not included in important conversations about health and social care services\, then how inclusive is interprofessionalism? When these professions are absent\, diversity of thought is also absent. When diversity of thought is absent\, then diversity of persons on our interprofessional teams is absent. If diversity of persons\, thoughts\, and professions are absent\, then we must ask ourselves “how just\, equitable\, and inclusive are our interprofessional efforts\, really?” \nThis workshop will encourage participant and/or institutional self-assessment\, reflection\, and action planning about diversity of professions within their institutions\, IPE programming\, and leadership. These professions may be graduates or students of community colleges and universities and may include clinical\, nonclinical\, technical\, and support personnel. By including these professionals\, diversity of thought\, persons\, and identities grows. By promoting inclusion of diverse\, high impact\, contributing professionals to patient/client care teams\, seats at our interprofessional tables will be filled by the right players at the right time for delivering the highest quality and safest care to consumers of our services. \nThe Summit’s theme “Interprofessional Collaboration to Address Health Equity\, Racism and Bias in Interprofessional Practice” will be addressed by highlighting incomplete diversity of professions and personal identities\, which\, consequently\, contributes to perpetuation of implicit biases\, institutional barriers\, structural racism\, and inequity of not only members of the interprofessional team\, but also of consumers of care. Patient/client care is enhanced by a diverse workforce\, and analyzing professional diversity of interprofessional teams will contribute toward societal justice\, equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and belonging (JEDI+B). \nAfter attending this session\, learners will be able to:\n-Engage in critical self and organizational assessment of interprofessional inclusion for determining which professions are missing from their “interprofessional tables”\n-Identify the critical insights that members of these missing professions might contribute to the interprofessional dialogue for enhancing patient/client outcomes\n-Identify and share at least one action item to increase diversity of professions on their interprofessional team(s) \nKnowledge gained from this workshop may be immediately actionable by the creation of a tangible plan for diversifying professions on their interprofessional teams through the lens of JEDI+B (justice\, equity\, diversity\, inclusion\, and belonging) \nLearning objectives will be achieved by including interactive discussions through chat contributions\, word clouds\, small group discussion\, and building a collective Google Doc that captures group-based action items and then shared with all participants. Lastly\, the next scheduled AIHC Social Hour will be the follow-up portion to this workshop for a check-in on progress on action items and plans. This topic will be easily generalizable to Social Hour guests who did not engage in the Summit workshop through encouragement to offer in-the-moment contributions to topic. \n  \nPresenters: \nErin Breitenbach\, PhD\, MEd\, A T Still University \nGina Baugh\, PharmD\, West Virginia University \nDan Ferguson\, MS\, Yakima Valley College \nKelly Karpa\, PhD\, FAPE\, NAP\, East Tennessee State University \nAmber King\, PharmD\, BCPS\, FNAP\, Thomas Jefferson University \nAngela Cecil\, PhD\, MBA\, OTR\, Texas Woman’s University

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Exploring the Future of AI Within Health Professions Education (April 3\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nAt a recent workshop run by the National Academies’ Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education (HPE)\, educators and practitioners with varying levels of understanding of artificial intelligence (AI)\, gathered to listen to and learn from those with experience in applying AI in HPE. Discussions were based on a framework proposed by Lomis et al. (2021) that emphasized collective action of educators across professions to implement and optimize the use of AI while mitigating unintended consequences. This discussion\, and the wisdom drawn from the audience’s questions and comments\, laid a foundation for next steps in following a roadmap for leveraging AI in classrooms and clinics. A proposed 60-minute skill-building seminar would introduce knowledge and skills that are immediately actionable for educating health professionals and their learners on critical issues to consider in relation to AI. \nTopics to be explored in this seminar would include: \n\nAI involvement and transparency in diagnosis and treatment planning\nAddressing public mistrust of AI through community education\nIntegration of AI into healthcare education and competencies\nEnsuring global participation and equity in AI integration\nAI applications in clinical education\, mental health\, and disaster response and potential disruptions to medical specialties\n\n  \nPresenters: \nKimberly Lomis\, MD\, American Medical Association \nPamela Jeffries\, PhD\, RN\, FAAN\, ANEF\, FSSH\, Vanderbilt University \nCornelius James\, MD\, University of Michigan \nCarole Tucker\, PhD\, PT\, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston \nCarl Sheperis\, PhD\, NCC\, CCMHC\, MAC\, ACS\, Kutztown University

SUMMARY:Nexus Summit 2023 Webinar Series: Interprofessional Practice and Education Through a One Health Lens (March 19\, 2024 12-1pm EST)
\n  \nAbstract: \nInterprofessional Education (IPE) has become a key focus in the curricula of health professions\, including veterinary medicine. The broad purpose of IPE is to provide educational opportunities between two or more professions that lead to current and future collaboration to improve patient and client care and health outcomes. One of the challenges of implementing IPE programs that include veterinary medicine is understanding the role of the veterinarian in the health team. The One Health initiative\, with its focus on interprofessional collaboration\, shares many similar themes with IPE and is widely utilized in veterinary medical education. This seminar will focus on how IPE can leverage One Health concepts and improve inclusion of veterinary medicine and other non-traditional professions such as environmental science and ecosystem health. \nOne Health is an approach that recognizes that the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment. As populations grow and expand into new geographic areas\, close contact with animals and their environments provides more opportunities for diseases to pass between animals and people. The recent COVID-19 pandemic is an example of a disease with transmission factors in humans\, animals\, and the environment. Organizations that focus on One Health competencies\, often adopt the same competency frameworks used in interprofessional work because the core concepts involve bringing multiple professions together\, fostering effective collaboration and team work\, to improve health outcomes. Focusing One Health and IPE on issues surrounding zoonotic diseases\, water and food security\, antimicrobial resistance\, and the impact of societal\, environmental\, and climatic factors are in alignment with the expressed goals of improving care and health outcomes. \nAddressing the theme of Building the IPE Case Through Information\, Evidence and Outcomes\, inclusion of One Health concepts and practitioners\, especially those connected to veterinary medicine and environmental science\, will expand the reach of IPE work. This session intends to leverage the relationship in advancing IPE through One Health in curricula across the nation\, especially including programs of veterinary medicine. Panelists from multiple institutions will share experiences and best-practices for incorporating topics related to human\, animal\, and environmental health into IPE curricula. Active learning will be encouraged through the use of short polls spliced between speakers and an interactive virtual whiteboard that tracks visually the links between IPE and One Health. Participants will be invited to share and reflect on their experience with One Health and veterinary medicine and methods they can utilize to incorporate One Health topics into existing IPE programs. \nLearning objectives and actionable skills: \n\nDefine One Health and interpret how One Health and IPE are similar.\nAnalyze how One Health concepts can be incorporated into interprofessional curricula.\nEnvision an action plan for the development/integration of One Health-focused IPE at participant’s university or organization\n\nThis seminar is submitted on behalf of the Clinical and Translational Science Award One Health Alliance (COHA)\, a consortium of veterinary schools that facilitates implementation of IPE. The collective expertise allows successful interprofessional interactions in a One Health context. \n  \nPresenters: \nClaire Tucker\, DVM\, MPH\, MS\, Post-Doctoral Fellow\, Colorado State University \nHossein Khalili\, BScN\, MScN\, PhD\, FNAP\, Winston-Salem State University \nAmy Blue\, PhD\, University of Florida \nJohn Tegzes\, VMD\, Western University of Health Sciences
